American Goner 'Your Hair is Winter Fire' Review

Rock band American Goner released their album "Your Hair is Winter Fire" on October 27th, 2017. The band was formed in 2016, and has a variety of demos, EPs, and albums available on their Bandcamp. American Goner has a unique sound, inspired not only by rock, but also testing out other styles. K.M. North, who makes up American Goner, stated the band likes to "Spice up" their sound, because "Having a band play the same song over and over gets boring." By testing out different styles of music with their rock sound, American Goner proves they are a great band for those who are into modern rock.

"You Hair is Winter Fire" specifically is more of a rock style. With vocals and melodies that remind me of bands like Pearl Jam, American Goner has elements of rock bands we all know and love, but has created their own brand through their willingness to try out new styles. North's vocals are excellent, sounding similar to those of Eddie Vedder. The album has a variety of upbeat and slower songs, all of which bring out American Goner's unique sound and style. My favorite songs off of this album are "Our Last Dance", "Lovers Club", and "Losers Club", because I think these three are the best in terms of sound, and are great examples of the band's style.

"Our Last Dance" has more of an upbeat tempo, and features brash guitar/drums. I also enjoy the vocals in this song, because they feel more isolated than in some of the others, making them more noticeable. North has definitely found a groove for his vocal style, which is verily expressed in this song. "Lovers Club" is one of the slower songs on the album, and I really enjoy it because of the lyrics. I find the lyrics to be beautiful and poetic, making the song even more pleasant to listen to. This song is really calming, and it flows admirably. It is an enjoyable change-up from the heavier rock sound presented on the album. "Losers Club" seems to be a happy medium between soft and hard rock. The song begins as slow instrumental, and leads into the voice of a woman speaking some poetic lines, which then breaks into a heavier rock sound. This song is probably my number one favorite, because I love the unique style and risks that American Goner took in its production. Overall, if you are a fan of rock music, I would recommend American Goner. Fusing a modern sound with qualities from well-known rock bands, American Goner has formed an interesting and unmatched rock style.

Single Review: Palaye Royale's "You'll Be Fine"

Written by Jade Marshall Palaye Royale released a new single called “You’ll Be Fine”. The band consist of three brothers, Remington Leith (vocals), Emerson Barrett (drums), and Sebastian Danzig (guitar). The song was released on July 19. My overall opinion of the single is that it is a really good song. The song opens with the lyrics, “I can see it in those eyes/ You’re so damn hypnotized/ You wanted to pretend the voice you hear is not in your head”. It seems to speak of a battle with oneself, as if they are trying to convince themselves the voices aren’t in their head. The lyrics then go on to encourage the listeners that they will be alright. “I’m looking for you out there/ I’m looking for truth within your stare/ I’m looking for you outside for you cause I mean it/ No I mean it you’ll be fine”. The single relates to other songs by the band because they all have a beat all of their own with a special meaning. I think this song tells us that their new music will be more so...

How to be front row at a concert

One question I get asked quite often is "How are you always front row at the concerts you go to??". I'm never really sure how to give a short answer to that question, so I decided to make a blog post about it! I would say it's fairly easy to be front row at a show (depending on who the artist is, I have been in line for shows where people have been camping out for DAYS prior). As long as you're willing to wait for a long time before the show, you can usually be front row. Key word is usually. I'm not guaranteeing you will be at the barricade every time, but out of the many shows I have been to, I have been front row more times than I haven't. In my opinion, I have the most fun when I'm front row, or when I'm in the pit in general. So here are my tips on how to be front row at a concert: 1. Buy pit/general admission tickets You absolutely have to buy pit or general admission tickets to a show if you want to be front row. Unless the venue ...

Why Bleachers' new album 'Gone Now' should be the soundtrack to your summer.

If there was an indie movie about my life, I would want the soundtrack to be 'Gone Now'. The music is great background music for life, and I don't mean in a way where people easily tune it out. This album gets me happy and energetic when I listen to it. Every time. And I have listened to it multiple times already. I was sunbathing earlier listening to this album, and it gave my day that perfect summer feeling. I only recently got into Bleachers after seeing them at PIQNIQ 2017, but I am already hooked. 'Gone Now' has a very unique sound. It flows well together, and has a happy, groovy feel. One thing that stuck out to me the most in this album is the occasional voice samples in the songs. At first I found it off-putting, just because it was different and kind of took me out of the song. After listening to the whole album and seeing how they tied together by the end, I know the album wouldn't be the same without it. Now I really like the mixed media feel...
