“Hollywood” is alright, or that's what 2D lead vocalist of the band Gorillaz would like to think in the new single “Hollywood”. This single is one of the few that just got released over the month of June, to the debut of The Now Now, the newest album. This song, like the past few singles, uses synths heavily in the beginning as Jamie Principle, the first of the two featured rappers, opens the song asking us “Where the beautiful people at?”. I'll say this now, in this song there are three people singing different perspectives; happy (Jamie), melancholy (2D), and indifferent (Snoop Dogg). The song is a introspective on how hollywood looks from the inside, alot like Panic! At the Disco's new song “Hey Look Ma I Made It”, but that's a review for Cheyenne. After a few verses from Jamie, 2D steps in with his much darker look at Hollywood talking about how the glitter and shine that most associated with hollywood isn't its true face, but much rather a dark and more gritty city that brings “dark times”. 2D seems to be talking mostly of the jealousy that's attached to stars in Hollywood and as he talks, Jamie pops in to talk about how seductive and beautiful Hollywood is. Next, we receive a small intermission from the weed king himself, Snoop Dogg. He seems to be the realist and indifferent to Hollywood, talking about how he goes along day-to-day in the town of Tinsel. Snoop doesn't have much in this song but is definitely a great addition to the song. Now, we switch back to 2D and Jamie, counters to each other while 2D keeps up his melancholy and dark lyrics Jamie continues to talk about how great Hollywood is as the city of dreams, still infatuating him to keep going.
This song makes my hopes high for the soon to be released album, along with the other two singles, the upcoming album should be amazing. This song is great for the underlying meaning of Hollywood not being the city of dreams and with current events in the news I completely understand 2D for talking about the “Vibe killers” in the city. The song itself is great and upbeat for the most part in the instrumentals but I also have the feeling of almost indifference in the melody, almost like it's meant to make you feel like an outside viewer to the bright lights that blind some. Overall, I loved this song and think it's a great song. I'm excited to see where it goes from here. This is your friendly neighborhood Rag Tag signing off till next time.
