Pop punk legends State Champs recently released their album Living Proof on June 15, 2018. My initial impression of the album is it’s really relaxing and it flows easily. This band is well known. Overall they have produced six albums. That's including their EPs and this new album. State Champs has been on their share of tours. They even opened for Sleeping With Sirens in November of 2016. One of their previous songs, “Around The World and Back”, was featuring Jule Vera. The band is made up of Derek DiScanio (Vocals), Tyler Szalkowski (lead guitar/ backup vocals), Tony “Rival” Diaz (rhythm guitar/ backing vocals), Ryan Scott Graham ( bass/ backing vocals), and Evan Ambrosio (drums).
The whole album has a theme that seems like it's all about a relationship. The first few songs sound like the relationship is headed in the right direction. With lyrics like this, “So what’s it mean/When every dream I have is about you now,/I can't believe/You get to me the way you do somehow/It’s criminal.” It seems that the song is about a love struck boy.
Later in the album it seems like the relationship went to the dumps. Lyrics like, “I wish I had a time machine/So you would never have to leave/And I wouldn't have to say sorry/But now we’re running on a picture perfect memory/Of all the things I couldn't say/And I’ll never have to say sorry that I couldn't save you.” These lyrics make it seem like he regrets losing someone he once loved.
This album has several songs that stand out. In the first song Criminal, the words flow very well, and the beat is relaxing as it starts off a great album. The next song that stands out is Dead and Gone. It’s a little banger, the words are catchy, and it’ll be in your head all day. The last song that stood out to me is Time Machine. It’s slower but I think it brings the whole thing together in a way, letting us know that there is regret because he never got the love he wanted, his relationship didn't go as planned. But it also shows that he understands he can't have everything he just wants to be able to save himself the heart ache. Really there are no songs that fall flat on this album, they are all tied together.
In my book, this album is a real banger. It’s a great album that deserves all the love it will get. This is a 10/10 album to me. Listen to the album and tell me what you think!
