Brendon freaking Urie is at it again with another banging album! My my, Panic! At the Disco (P!ATD) never lets me down. On June 22nd, P!ATD, released the entirety of Pray for the Wicked alongside a new music video for “Hey Look Ma, I Made It”. Let me just say, that was probably my best day off work so far. I played the album all day long and haven’t stopped since. I’ve told everyone I know about the album, making sure everyone knows of the masterpiece that is Pray for the Wicked. I’ve had almost everyone song stuck in my head at least once. P!ATD consists of Brendon Urie. That’s really it. He does it all. He has his fantastic touring members Kenneth Harris (guitar), Dan Pawlovich (drums), and Nicole Row (bass). It always impresses me that Urie can do it all. The man is a legend.
For this album,Urie wanted more of an old fashioned vibe to it, which is obvious upon listening to the album. I believe he was going for an old 20’s vibe, which I love. Though, the one song that is titled after that decade, “Roaring 20s”, sounds more like an Arabian Nights song. There’s this higher pitched noise, I’m not sure of the instrument, that makes it sound like that. That’s to me at least. It’s not bad, I actually really enjoy it, but I thought it was a little funny that that’s the song that sounds the least like a 20s song.
Many of the songs are true bops. They’re definitely something that I can hear on the radio or something to be played at parties. I mean there are songs that talk about that in a way, like “Roaring 20”, “One of the Drunks”, or even “Dancing’s Not A Crime”. Though, I have to same, my favorites are “Say Amen (Saturday Night)”, “Dancing’s Not A Crime”, and “Dying in LA”. All three have been stuck in my head and you can for sure catch me at work whispering the words under my breathe, with a slight head bob. I can’t get them out of my head! “Say Amen” was one of the first songs released with a video, alongside “(Fuck A) Silver Lining”. This song has been out for a few months and it was an instant bop. I got to hear it live already, which was absolutely incredible, and my best friend and I jammed out in her car to it. Trust me, it wasn’t a normal jam session, it was intense and hilarious. I love it so much because I already made memories to that song. “Dancing’s Not A Crime” is just so damn catchy! I love it and I am desperately praying (for the wicked of course) for it be played on the upcoming tour. Lastly “Dying in LA” is just a nice and peaceful song. It’s slower than the rest, less of a bop since it’s slower, but heck it’s beautiful. There seems to be this higher emotion in the song, about LA and Urie’s experiences there. God, I just love it. The vocals are like those of an angel, there’s just so much emotion and more of a rawness to it than the others. It could honestly just be me looking too much into things, but I just get this feeling from the song. I adore it.
Overall, the album is a masterpiece. The songs are refreshing, something different. Not too often do I hear older sounding music, but with a modern twist. There are so many bops on this album, something I’m going to be listening to for weeks! 110% recommend giving this album a listen and checking out the music videos that go with it. Check out Panic! At the Disco on tour this summer with A R I Z O N A and Hayley Kiyoko. Finally, remember to pray for the wicked.
