Artist Feature: Chess At Breakfast

Written by Kaitlyn Monroe
As a music blog, it’s our job to not only give you the new singles and albums of your favorite and well known artists, but to also shed some light on the smaller, new, up and coming artists as they climb the success ladders of the industry! Today we’re shining the light on Chess at Breakfast. They describe their genre as somewhere in between progressive-psychedelic rock with elements of punk and when you listen to their music if feels just like that; it’s a tie dye, feel good, constantly evolving, kick in the ass kind of vibe; and I’m digging it hardcore. The band consists of three members, Caleb McFadden (lead vocals and guitar), Justin Daggett (bass, and keys), and finally Mike Davis (Drums and Progressions). I know what you're thinking, what kind of name is Chess at Breakfast --then again what are most of the names of bands these days-- however the meaning behind the original name is far from uninteresting. To the three members of Chess at Breakfast, their name represents the “nature of war and how some people see it as a game --much like chess-- and the dichotomy that comes with that” (for those of you who don’t know what dichotomy is, it's a contrast between two things that are opposites.) I figured I’d add that in there because along with me I’m sure there’s more of you who didn’t know the meaning of the word; I’ve got your backs Alt fam. The group went on to say “as in how war often takes place in and around people's homes, and serene settings” (represented by Breakfast, which is usually a very peaceful part of everyone's day) They mentioned that they “try to reflect this particular concept in their music with stark and contrast transitions between angst and calming soundscapes.” This group has a lot of spunk and charisma and with that I believe they’ll go far. I feel they reflect the concept well and will continue to do so and revolutionize the alternative genre.
Speaking of concept reflection, the band has asked us to check out their latest single “Pushing Daisies” and oh hot damn did I enjoy it! This song brought me back to my first concert, which was last March I believe. One of the first alternative bands I fell for, Cage The Elephant, was playing in a city nearby, along with that they had a local group by the name of King Buffalo and another new and upcoming group Chrome Pony open for them. "Pushing Daisies" is like Cage The Elephant, King Buffalo, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers had a love child and named it Mick. I’m telling you right now, this band is going places. The song started off pretty wild with the opening line”Everything in this cage drops dead.” What a way to start a song! I like it though, it’s quite punk and literally psychedelic. It has a heavy, thick, and juicy bass melody-- so it's basically a melodic cheeseburger, but in a very good way-- which becomes the musical focus point. The drums become the classic fries pairing to this burger, with Mike Davis kicking out steady and straightforward drum roll beat, with a nice consistent pinging hi hat. The chorus (and even actually throughout the song) changes pace and puts me in the shoes of Queen in the operatic portion of Bohemian rhapsody and that’s pretty epic if you ask me. The nice thing about this band though, is they're consistent with that feeling and they live up to their word of dichotomy. Their songs are a constant up and down, left and right, salt and pepper mash up and it’s fantastic. The funk vibe of it all, ties it together and makes some beautiful sounds.
Congratulations to Chess at Breakfast on their new single “Pushing Daisies” I give them a 10/10 and the blessings of the rock gods above. Go check them out and give their other killer songs a listen.

Tyler Carter "Pressure" Single Review

Written by Jade Marshall  A new single “Pressure” by Tyler Carter was released on June 28th. My overall opinion of this song is that it's a really good release. The song is great and it is such a beautiful song in a strange yet wonderful way, it’s one of a kind. The beginning of the song stood out, because you hardly hear the beat in the background but you hear his voice quite strongly, it’s really beautiful. The chorus itself is prominent, as it is saying that he needs someone who will take him as him and not put all this extra pressure on him for not being who they want. “I remember when you told me/I should go back to the old me/Before the Taylor's and the tattoos/Before the Perignon and OG.” This part stands out because it opens ups the song up and tells you right off the back what he wants. “I'm frankensteinin' they wanna put me back in the lab/If I'm gonna be grinding, if I'm gonna be making this skrill/I'm gonna do it my way, bitch get out of ...

Artist Feature: EXNATIONS

Written by Alexis Hodo Indie/pop trio EXNATIONS released their third single, ‘Blank White’ as a final introduction to their first EP Tiny Sound in the Dark . Based out of New York, EXNATIONS have been together for a year and will welcome their first EP into the world on August 24. I wasn’t sure what to expect with their latest single ‘Blank White’ considering I have never heard of the band before. Judging from their neon artwork, slightly reminding me of The 1975, I figured they would have an indie sound to them. The single does well for the vibe of EXNATIONS following their other singles ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ and ‘Never About the Money’ which hold the same sound as ‘Blank White.’ They are different enough in that they showcase the band holds variety in their sound, but similar enough to tell the songs stem from the same project. What I like about ‘Blank White’ is the fun boppy intro the song provides listeners with. After I hear “At the Blank White of the moon” I truly ju...

Atlas Genius concert review

Hello! I have been gone for a while because I'm a lot busier now that I'm in school, but I have a lot of concerts coming up so I will be posting more frequently. I went back to Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 5th to see Atlas Genius. I do like their music a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. I honestly wanted to go mostly because I fell in love with Bottom Lounge when I was last there to see Andrew McMahon. I always end up liking the opening acts they bring in and I love the intimate atmosphere. I hope to continue going there to discover new music. Half The Animal The first band that opened was Half The Animal. I had never even heard of them before and had no clue what they sounded like. As soon as they started I really got into them. They have an indie-pop sound, which is something I've started appreciating more recently. The lead singer, Chase Johnson, had an incredible amount of energy. He was dancing and getting into the music and the energy fr...
