American Authors "Deep Water" Single Review

Written by Kaitlyn Monroe

As some of you might know, American Authors is back at it again with their ever raging Indie pop, modern rock mix with their new single Deep Water released May 17th, 2018 by Universal Music Group. Though an official music video hasn’t been debuted, you get a beautiful sense of where the band is heading with the audio. The band consists of Zac Barnett, (Guitarist and Lead Vocalist) James Adam Shelley, (Guitarist and Banjoist) Dave Rublin, (Bassist) and finally Matt Sanchez (Drummer). The typical vibes American Authors gives off is very energetic, lively, and quite uplifting; always leaving a smile on your face and a lesson stuck in your head. They quartet tends to keep their music positive and uplifting, though if you dig deeper there is always a deeper meaning. Their songs generally have a sad, or negative underlying meaning; but the thing American Authors is notorious for is turning the negatives into positives and bringing the bad to meet the good in every situation which is a wonderful message.
Deep Water stays true to their positive, lively, rainbow at the end of the dark tunel attitude. The song stands true to lead vocalist Zac Barnett’s thick, deep, and harmonizing vocals paired with a strong bass beat. It reminds me of X Ambassadors and their song Renegade in some aspects, but it's exciting to listen to because you actually feel like your floating in the water, sloshing left and right into the ocean being carried out into the sea. It’s like when you stick your head under the water and open your eyes and instead of seeing seaweed or fish you discover Atlantis and you’re filled with wonder and awe as you swim towards it. As the song falls into the chorus the tempo picks up and the tensions rises like a Zeppelin. It’s like you’re so close to touching that lost city but something more powerful steps in your path: a shark. You stare the shark in the eyes but it doesn’t bite you, instead it lets you pet it, grab its fin, and ride into the city on its back. That's how much power this song holds. There is so much emotion in the lyrics as well. Barnett sings of making it to the top of the success ladder by “a tidal wave” but the pressure of the success and all that comes with it is drowning him in the deep water. He wants the dream, the success, the love, but without the pain, the suffering and the hard choices. He’s asking for help to stay afloat and to be kept sane.
Overall Deep Water is a very powerful and meaningful song, the lyrics are oozing with emotions and the melodies are thick with soul and heart. Though the song is played more in a minor scale than a major --which is a big change from the original sun shining music American Authors normally produces-- you still feel the energy, power, optimism, and wonder lust of their traditional sound. I think if they’re going to continue to mix things up as they have with this single, they’re heading for the top of the charts once again.

Tyler Carter "Pressure" Single Review

Written by Jade Marshall  A new single “Pressure” by Tyler Carter was released on June 28th. My overall opinion of this song is that it's a really good release. The song is great and it is such a beautiful song in a strange yet wonderful way, it’s one of a kind. The beginning of the song stood out, because you hardly hear the beat in the background but you hear his voice quite strongly, it’s really beautiful. The chorus itself is prominent, as it is saying that he needs someone who will take him as him and not put all this extra pressure on him for not being who they want. “I remember when you told me/I should go back to the old me/Before the Taylor's and the tattoos/Before the Perignon and OG.” This part stands out because it opens ups the song up and tells you right off the back what he wants. “I'm frankensteinin' they wanna put me back in the lab/If I'm gonna be grinding, if I'm gonna be making this skrill/I'm gonna do it my way, bitch get out of ...

Artist Feature: EXNATIONS

Written by Alexis Hodo Indie/pop trio EXNATIONS released their third single, ‘Blank White’ as a final introduction to their first EP Tiny Sound in the Dark . Based out of New York, EXNATIONS have been together for a year and will welcome their first EP into the world on August 24. I wasn’t sure what to expect with their latest single ‘Blank White’ considering I have never heard of the band before. Judging from their neon artwork, slightly reminding me of The 1975, I figured they would have an indie sound to them. The single does well for the vibe of EXNATIONS following their other singles ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ and ‘Never About the Money’ which hold the same sound as ‘Blank White.’ They are different enough in that they showcase the band holds variety in their sound, but similar enough to tell the songs stem from the same project. What I like about ‘Blank White’ is the fun boppy intro the song provides listeners with. After I hear “At the Blank White of the moon” I truly ju...

Atlas Genius concert review

Hello! I have been gone for a while because I'm a lot busier now that I'm in school, but I have a lot of concerts coming up so I will be posting more frequently. I went back to Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 5th to see Atlas Genius. I do like their music a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. I honestly wanted to go mostly because I fell in love with Bottom Lounge when I was last there to see Andrew McMahon. I always end up liking the opening acts they bring in and I love the intimate atmosphere. I hope to continue going there to discover new music. Half The Animal The first band that opened was Half The Animal. I had never even heard of them before and had no clue what they sounded like. As soon as they started I really got into them. They have an indie-pop sound, which is something I've started appreciating more recently. The lead singer, Chase Johnson, had an incredible amount of energy. He was dancing and getting into the music and the energy fr...
