New Artist Feature: The Aphotic

Written by Harley Lewis
The Aphotic, a duo from Central, Texas, with producer and lead vocalist Jesse (Birth Name Jesus but began using the name Jesse from his first year in a school in Virginia) and guitarist Charlie. The duo first met in high school when Jesse was not producing any music. Charlie ended up going into a college with a scholarship for Orchestra in San Antonio, meanwhile Jesse went to a school in VA to study for a Criminology degree. Midway through Jesse's first year in college (fall, 2016) he began creating and writing music, "I ended up making a lot of bad music but I was enjoying making it" Jesse stated. By summer of 2017 Jesse had convinced his parents to allow him to go to Austin to pursue a music career. Jesse began engineering, producing and writing music for other artists in the area. Although Jesse enjoyed it, he wanted to produce his own music, so he picked up where he left off and began writing more music and got back in contact with Charlie.
Charlie met up with Jesse in Austin and Charlie played guitar over some of Jesse's tracks, 2 hours before Charlie arrived, Jesse began working on new music as he wasn't feeling anything he had previously made. Within 6 hours the duo had made their first track 'Dreams.' Due to the writing session going well, the duo decided to "Turn it into a thing. Like a project, and The Aphotic was born" Jesse has stated that picking a name for their 'project' was difficult, as they couldn't decide on what they should call themselves, but one night Jesse read something about the Aphotic Zone and it stood out to him because of its meaning. "It was so perfect" Jesse states, and goes on to say how him and Charlie believe if they called themselves anything else that their two released singles 'Dreams' or even 'Wrong Ways' wouldn't sound the same to us [listeners].

Dreams is a well produced song, with a mixture of amazingly produced music and beautifully written lyrics. I strongly believe that it was the perfect single for the duo's first release. Jesse's voice fits perfectly with the music and all together the song is just beautifully put together! Charlie's guitar rhythm and tab isn't too much nor too little, its just the right amount of everything.

Wrong Ways is also a well produced song, the calming guitar intro before changing into more of an upbeat song is great! Jesse's vocals and Charlie's guitar rhythms fit together perfectly and it wont be long until this song is at 1,000+ listens!! The lyrics in this song can have different meanings for everyone, Jesse could have written it about something completely different to what you think the meaning is, its almost like a mystery!!

Personally, I can see this duo going places in the future! I would recommend them to anyone, I think they can fit under multiple categories and that's what makes them unique! My personal favorite single so far is definitely Dreams! I suggest you all go and check them out on Spotify and show their music to others, I'm sure Charlie and Jesse would greatly appreciate it!

Tyler Carter "Pressure" Single Review

Written by Jade Marshall  A new single “Pressure” by Tyler Carter was released on June 28th. My overall opinion of this song is that it's a really good release. The song is great and it is such a beautiful song in a strange yet wonderful way, it’s one of a kind. The beginning of the song stood out, because you hardly hear the beat in the background but you hear his voice quite strongly, it’s really beautiful. The chorus itself is prominent, as it is saying that he needs someone who will take him as him and not put all this extra pressure on him for not being who they want. “I remember when you told me/I should go back to the old me/Before the Taylor's and the tattoos/Before the Perignon and OG.” This part stands out because it opens ups the song up and tells you right off the back what he wants. “I'm frankensteinin' they wanna put me back in the lab/If I'm gonna be grinding, if I'm gonna be making this skrill/I'm gonna do it my way, bitch get out of ...

Artist Feature: EXNATIONS

Written by Alexis Hodo Indie/pop trio EXNATIONS released their third single, ‘Blank White’ as a final introduction to their first EP Tiny Sound in the Dark . Based out of New York, EXNATIONS have been together for a year and will welcome their first EP into the world on August 24. I wasn’t sure what to expect with their latest single ‘Blank White’ considering I have never heard of the band before. Judging from their neon artwork, slightly reminding me of The 1975, I figured they would have an indie sound to them. The single does well for the vibe of EXNATIONS following their other singles ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ and ‘Never About the Money’ which hold the same sound as ‘Blank White.’ They are different enough in that they showcase the band holds variety in their sound, but similar enough to tell the songs stem from the same project. What I like about ‘Blank White’ is the fun boppy intro the song provides listeners with. After I hear “At the Blank White of the moon” I truly ju...

Atlas Genius concert review

Hello! I have been gone for a while because I'm a lot busier now that I'm in school, but I have a lot of concerts coming up so I will be posting more frequently. I went back to Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 5th to see Atlas Genius. I do like their music a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. I honestly wanted to go mostly because I fell in love with Bottom Lounge when I was last there to see Andrew McMahon. I always end up liking the opening acts they bring in and I love the intimate atmosphere. I hope to continue going there to discover new music. Half The Animal The first band that opened was Half The Animal. I had never even heard of them before and had no clue what they sounded like. As soon as they started I really got into them. They have an indie-pop sound, which is something I've started appreciating more recently. The lead singer, Chase Johnson, had an incredible amount of energy. He was dancing and getting into the music and the energy fr...
