Arctic Monkeys "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" Album Review

Written by Kaitlyn Monroe

Music and its makers are constantly changing and evolving, keeping things fresh and original to themselves. We all love the badass Greaser guys of Arctic Monkeys, but with their new album “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” they’ve brought with them a new 70’s like gimmick with a softer, more heartfelt, soul type sound.

The first song on the album, “Star Treatment”, really sets you up and prepares you for the new vibes of Arctic Monkeys. The song starts with a light vocal, and hushed tones, but the guitar is going strong with its deep, low, and mesmerizing riffs. It’s not hard to get lost in lead vocalist Alex Turner's soft soothing ballads, and you’ll be hooked on the band once again. I took note of “One Point Perspective” for the fact that this particular song put me into Mission Impossible, with 007 himself: James Bond. Let me explain. This is a very mellow song with a piercing piano melody. When I listened to it, the song took me to a scene where Bond would be walking into a bar, and he’d have his smoldering look and he’d order his scotch on the rocks, take a sip, and look around the room. While he’s looking, a striking brunette catches his eye, and gives him the “come and get me look” that makes him start to walk over to her and leads him to the phrase “Your place, or mine.” with a very well conducted wink. The song screams romance, and tranquility, two descriptions that follow not just the song but the album through and through.

“Four Out Of Five” is a fun one to say the least, the beginning of the song starts with a solo piano that leads into a pinging noise that fills your ears and leads you into the song. The lyrics alone make you stop and think. Once the chorus came on I thought I was listening to another version of Hotel California. Turner sings about his hotel, and how wonderful it is, and that we should all join them in the fun.Unlike Hotel California, this is not a love song. Someone had left a Four out of Five star review on the hotel and as Turner puts it he “won’t stand for it.” so he’s trying to build back up his reputation and have a better start, so maybe there’s some self reflection in this one.

Although Arctic Monkeys have traded in their combs and slicked back hair for a new, maturing look, traces of the old can be found running amok in the new. “She Looks Like Fun” is a perfection combination of the old greaser vibes and the new schmoozer vibes. It mixes the soft soul vocals of the new with the raging instrumentals of the old. It’s a match made in heaven. This song is constantly changing pace and pitch, pushing and pulling you in every directions, but once Turner gets his short guitar riff you're caught in the song hook, line, and sinker.

Overall I enjoyed Arctic Monkeys new album, and after the long hiatus this new groove they’ve got going on is a turn for the better and I’m sure it will be a surprise for us all to see where they’re going to go after this one.

Tyler Carter "Pressure" Single Review

Written by Jade Marshall  A new single “Pressure” by Tyler Carter was released on June 28th. My overall opinion of this song is that it's a really good release. The song is great and it is such a beautiful song in a strange yet wonderful way, it’s one of a kind. The beginning of the song stood out, because you hardly hear the beat in the background but you hear his voice quite strongly, it’s really beautiful. The chorus itself is prominent, as it is saying that he needs someone who will take him as him and not put all this extra pressure on him for not being who they want. “I remember when you told me/I should go back to the old me/Before the Taylor's and the tattoos/Before the Perignon and OG.” This part stands out because it opens ups the song up and tells you right off the back what he wants. “I'm frankensteinin' they wanna put me back in the lab/If I'm gonna be grinding, if I'm gonna be making this skrill/I'm gonna do it my way, bitch get out of ...

Artist Feature: EXNATIONS

Written by Alexis Hodo Indie/pop trio EXNATIONS released their third single, ‘Blank White’ as a final introduction to their first EP Tiny Sound in the Dark . Based out of New York, EXNATIONS have been together for a year and will welcome their first EP into the world on August 24. I wasn’t sure what to expect with their latest single ‘Blank White’ considering I have never heard of the band before. Judging from their neon artwork, slightly reminding me of The 1975, I figured they would have an indie sound to them. The single does well for the vibe of EXNATIONS following their other singles ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ and ‘Never About the Money’ which hold the same sound as ‘Blank White.’ They are different enough in that they showcase the band holds variety in their sound, but similar enough to tell the songs stem from the same project. What I like about ‘Blank White’ is the fun boppy intro the song provides listeners with. After I hear “At the Blank White of the moon” I truly ju...

Atlas Genius concert review

Hello! I have been gone for a while because I'm a lot busier now that I'm in school, but I have a lot of concerts coming up so I will be posting more frequently. I went back to Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 5th to see Atlas Genius. I do like their music a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. I honestly wanted to go mostly because I fell in love with Bottom Lounge when I was last there to see Andrew McMahon. I always end up liking the opening acts they bring in and I love the intimate atmosphere. I hope to continue going there to discover new music. Half The Animal The first band that opened was Half The Animal. I had never even heard of them before and had no clue what they sounded like. As soon as they started I really got into them. They have an indie-pop sound, which is something I've started appreciating more recently. The lead singer, Chase Johnson, had an incredible amount of energy. He was dancing and getting into the music and the energy fr...
