Nothing But Thieves concert review + meeting Missio!

If you read my Lolla Aftershow review, you would know I won guest list passes from the band Missio by being their 10kth follower on Instagram. I went to their Chicago show at Lincoln Hall on Wednesday, October 25th, 2017, on their tour with Nothing But Thieves and Airways. I had never been on the guest list for a show before, so I didn't really know what to do, but Missio was very helpful in answering my messages and letting me know how to get in. I was also very excited to see Nothing But Thieves since I recently got into them after listening to their latest album "Broken Machine". I brought my boyfriend Cody as my plus one, and we both had a great time.

Airways
I had never even heard of Airways before coming to this concert, but I can honestly say I enjoyed their set a lot. The band consists of Jake (vocals/guitar), Alex (guitar), Jamie (bass), and Brian (drums). The band Peterborough, United Kingdom. As soon as Jake started singing, his voice reminded me of a young Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys. Their sound also reminded me of Cage the Elephant. The heavy guitar and drums, but hints of electronic sound gave them an alternative/indie feel. The crowd also seemed to like them, there were even a few groups of people who seemed to know every word to their songs. One small critique I have about the energy of the band members is Jake didn't seem to have much facial expression or movement. Given, it was a small space they had to play on due to other equipment for sets behind them, but overall his expression seemed pretty bored. This is definitely a band that you should be paying attention to if you like bands like Arctic Monkeys and Cage the Elephant. I was very impressed with their set and am excited to see what they produce in the future.

Missio
As usual, Missio was beyond impressive with their set. Missio is most known for their hit songs "Middle Fingers" and "Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea". The duo consists of Matthew Brue (vocals), and David Butler (instrumentalist) from Austin, Texas. I have never seen a band quite like them, in many aspects. Their sound is very unique, especially compared with what I usually listen to. I never liked much electronic music until I saw them. Their songs not only have catchy beats, but meaningful lyrics discussing issues such as addiction, depression, and anxiety. Brue has a voice that is powerful and haunting. They have so much energy while on stage, and it's obvious they really enjoy performing. The way they play off of each other while performing keeps the energy going and gets the crowd into it. They bring it no matter what, and don't seem to have any trouble hyping up a crowd. A lot of their songs also have some great lines that the audience wants to participate in, like "KDV", "Middle Fingers", and "I Don't Give A...". Their talent has improved greatly even since I saw them the first time a few months ago, and I have become a huge fan of their music. I would recommend them even if you're not as into electronic types of music. Their music is really great and they deserve recognition for their hard work.

Nothing But Thieves
Nothing But Thieve's set totally blew me away. Known for their songs "Trip Switch", "Sorry", and "Amsterdam", the band has made quite a name for themselves in the alternative music scene. The band consists of Conor Mason (vocals), Dom Craik (guitar), James Price (drums), Joe Langridge Brown (guitar), and Philip Blake (bass). I only recently got into Nothing But Thieves after reviewing their latest album "Broken Machine" for my school newspaper, so I had never seen them live before. The aspect of their set that impressed me the most was how much they sound like their recordings. A lot of times, bands will sound good on recording, but not live. Nothing But Thieves is not one of those bands; they sound incredible either way. They also had a lot of energy and passion while performing. Mason's voice is one of the greatest I have heard, he clearly has natural, raw talent. I was very glad they played "Particles", which is my favorite song by them, and also "Live Like Animals". The band was also incredibly humble on stage, constantly thanking the audience for coming out and supporting them, which was refreshing. I would recommend Nothing But Thieves to those who like alternative rock, and bands such as Royal Blood, The Neighbourhood, or Highly Suspect. I hope to see them live again, and am confident they will continue to produce great music in the future.

Meeting Missio
After the show, I was also supposed to meet Missio. It's a good thing Cody and I left out the door we did, because otherwise we probably wouldn't have seen them. As we were heading out, Cody saw them and thanked them for giving us the tickets. They were very nice about it and thanked us for coming out to the show. We got a picture with them (which is below), but it was pretty crowded with everyone trying to leave, so we had to go soon after that. Even though our meeting was brief, I was so happy they gave me the tickets and that I got to both see and meet them. They are genuinely nice guys and I hope sometime we get to meet again when it's less crowded and we can have more time to talk. Overall, this was a great and unique experience for me, and gave me some cool stuff to write about here on my blog. I would recommend trying to see all three of the bands I talked about in this post. They're all incredibly talented and awesome.

Tyler Carter "Pressure" Single Review

Written by Jade Marshall  A new single “Pressure” by Tyler Carter was released on June 28th. My overall opinion of this song is that it's a really good release. The song is great and it is such a beautiful song in a strange yet wonderful way, it’s one of a kind. The beginning of the song stood out, because you hardly hear the beat in the background but you hear his voice quite strongly, it’s really beautiful. The chorus itself is prominent, as it is saying that he needs someone who will take him as him and not put all this extra pressure on him for not being who they want. “I remember when you told me/I should go back to the old me/Before the Taylor's and the tattoos/Before the Perignon and OG.” This part stands out because it opens ups the song up and tells you right off the back what he wants. “I'm frankensteinin' they wanna put me back in the lab/If I'm gonna be grinding, if I'm gonna be making this skrill/I'm gonna do it my way, bitch get out of ...

Artist Feature: EXNATIONS

Written by Alexis Hodo Indie/pop trio EXNATIONS released their third single, ‘Blank White’ as a final introduction to their first EP Tiny Sound in the Dark . Based out of New York, EXNATIONS have been together for a year and will welcome their first EP into the world on August 24. I wasn’t sure what to expect with their latest single ‘Blank White’ considering I have never heard of the band before. Judging from their neon artwork, slightly reminding me of The 1975, I figured they would have an indie sound to them. The single does well for the vibe of EXNATIONS following their other singles ‘Can’t Get Hurt’ and ‘Never About the Money’ which hold the same sound as ‘Blank White.’ They are different enough in that they showcase the band holds variety in their sound, but similar enough to tell the songs stem from the same project. What I like about ‘Blank White’ is the fun boppy intro the song provides listeners with. After I hear “At the Blank White of the moon” I truly ju...

Atlas Genius concert review

Hello! I have been gone for a while because I'm a lot busier now that I'm in school, but I have a lot of concerts coming up so I will be posting more frequently. I went back to Bottom Lounge in Chicago on October 5th to see Atlas Genius. I do like their music a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan. I honestly wanted to go mostly because I fell in love with Bottom Lounge when I was last there to see Andrew McMahon. I always end up liking the opening acts they bring in and I love the intimate atmosphere. I hope to continue going there to discover new music. Half The Animal The first band that opened was Half The Animal. I had never even heard of them before and had no clue what they sounded like. As soon as they started I really got into them. They have an indie-pop sound, which is something I've started appreciating more recently. The lead singer, Chase Johnson, had an incredible amount of energy. He was dancing and getting into the music and the energy fr...
